What you need to know to make heads
or tails out of buying standard steel shelving.
1 - Weight you want on a shelf, and the size of the shelf
to whole inches.
2 - How tall you need the shelving.
3 - Do you want each section to be "stand-alone" sections, or
attached end to end. Attaching end to end makes the first section the
"starter" and all following units "adders". If you
start a new row, you need a starter and more adders.
4 - Do you want "open" sides and backs so you can see through all
sides, or "closed" shelving that is solid sheets on three sides.
5 - Now that you have the weight per shelf, and the size and height, you need
to access the manufacturers load ratings and available sizes.
6 - Then, and this is not super critical, shelf construction can change load
ratings. Boxer edged shelving is stronger by construction than flanged
shelving but steel gauge thickness and the use of stiffeners can make flanged
shelving as strong as boxer edge. But flanged edge shelving may require
the handling of more parts during assembly. So it's something to think about.
What you need to know about
"rivet" rack or bulk shelving.
1 - Everybody makes this "rivet" rack. It
has rivets in the shelf beams that nest in corresponding holes in the
uprights. Tapping the beams downward can lock the rivets into the tear
drop shaped holes.
2 - This type of rack is more often used with particle board shelving, but
particle board warps under its own weight over time. 3/4" plywood
is a better though more expensive choice.
3 - Steel deck and wire mesh deck can also be used, and even perforated steel
sheet deck. Perforated or wire mesh permits airflow and in the event of
fire water from sprinklers to reach the product.
4 - Here again the load you want it to carry will make the parts used
important.
