Big Lift Truck Forks - Don't be calling me up crying the blues about a truck worth $50,000 to $200,000 in need of forks and, why are they so expensive. Imagine what kind of 4140 steel and steel making equipment is used for these huge forks...and the kind of liability in this. So here's some quotes.
The critical part of big forks is the overload capability, the forks should carry at least 1/2 as much as the trucks capacity...because if you've ever seen a really big forklift carrying a huge casting across a roadway, you'll know the forks are acting like spring shocks with every bump. II AND III only - Generally, 3000 to 5000 lb. capacity forklifts are class II and 6000 to 8000 lb. capacity trucks are class III. A typical class II carriage is 16" top to bottom and class III is 20".

Length of extension must not exceed 1.5 times the length of the fork. i.e. A 48" fork can only take a 72" extension.

Calculating lift truck capacity further out on the forks (or rug pole, or jib crane).
Step 1: TRUCK LIFT CAPACITY x rated load center (typically 24") = inch/pound maximum [I.E: 5000 x 24" = 120,000]. Find info on data plate on forklift.
Step 2: PRODUCT CENTER OF GRAVITY (assuming 72" fork extensions under 72" long evenly distributed load item, like 6' pallet, or 12' rug pole is centered at 72")
Step 3: Math home work 5000 x 24" = 120,000 divided by 36" (new center of product) makes truck capacity with 36" load center 3333 lbs.
